Since 1983, the Haight Ashbury Food Program served hundreds of hot meals each day, four days per week, offering community and connection as well tasty and nutritious food. The Community Kitchen served more than 1 million meals during its operation.
Recently, rising costs and rising demand for meals forced the Board of Directors to change the structure of the programs at HAFP, as it was no longer economically feasible to provide meal service to the growing numbers of those in need in our small facility. The Community Kitchen closed in early 2008, and was replaced by the Pantry Program, which provides nutritious food to those in need that can be prepared at home.
We make a special effort to provide foods through the Pantry Program that can be used by those without permanent homes or cooking facilities, since they are part of the clientele we serve at HAFP.
Food Service Job Training Program
For nine years HAFP operated a Food Service Job Training Project, which trained 164 low-income adults toward employment in the food service industry.
The training program, funded primarily through Federal sources, provided training and certification in safe food handling, knife skills and basic nutrition, but also provided life skills such as non-violent communication, job readiness, budget management, and others.
Almost unprecedented, the JTP had an 83% graduation rate! We are very proud of our JTP graduates, many of whom are working in catering companies, local restaurants, schools and other facilities in San Francisco.
